Covering Letters

8 Jun

When applying for jobs, attached to my CV I provide a covering letter. This briefly introduces myself and my experience to future employees. I have been lucky enough to get an interview at a local business – Bradford Marketing. This was the covering letter I presented to them;

Dear Tanya,

I saw your advertisement on reed.co.uk and feel that my degree, experience and determination well qualify me for this position as a graduate marketing assistant.

I am keen and excited about the opportunity to work for such a fast growing business and have excellent retail service skills alongside my experience of working as part of a large team.

As I am due to graduate this year I feel that my skills and qualifications from my education will benefit me a lot in the position advertised. Whilst at University I have been able to work on group projects as well as individual work. Just recently I have had to organise our degree show, this involved managing the budget and finances and planning the whole set up of the building, as well as liaising between staff and other students. I feel that I am always an active member of a group and a person sought out by others for assistance.

I was also chosen to complete work experience at my local radio station Mercia FM and also be part of a project with BBC Coventry and Warwickshire. Both of these opportunities have allowed me to recognise important skills that I have such as my confident communication skills. On a regular basis I was working one-on-one approaching members of the public and talking to them about specified topics.

Furthermore I believe my media degree will be a great advantage as I am aware of the industry and competitiveness therefore able to work extremely hard and recognise how the media industry works and what is expected.

If you find that my skills match your needs for this position, I hope that you will contact me soon about an interview so we can further discuss this opportunity.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Stacey Trodden

Career Goals

28 May

When in my second year at University, I wrote that in five years time I see myself as being very successful in whichever career path I choose. I’m hoping now that this will be something that comes around sooner rather than later!! I have been gaining knowledge year-by-year and attaining a vast amount of professional contacts. I am confident that I have completed my work with excellence, oppourtunities will inevitably open up for me.
I am at present looking for a full-time position in either the radio/television industry or in events organisation. I have always wanted to work on the radio and I believe my personality suits it very well. I am outgoing, bubbly but still very hardworking and professional.
With events organisation I believe that this career would suit me also, as I am able to work very hard even under pressure. I am well organised, well prepared for things and enjoy organising events and activities in my social life.
I understand that I may have to start my career as an assistant or runner but the more knowledge, experience and hard work I put in to it the further I will progress. And I am willing and eager to work my way up.

My C.V

Thinking about the beginning

27 May

Media production for me was promoted as a ‘practical’ course, I enjoy working hands-on and actively, rather than writing a 3000 word essay. I throughly enjoyed media studies during my A levels, unfortunately however, did not take the opportunity to study it whilst undertaking my G.C.S.E’s, therefore only studied it for 2 years whilst at school. Media production offers a variety of different modules and not just term by term, they are incorporated in to one term so I have had the opportunity to learn a lot year-by-year. The course has taught me new and emerging technologies and has helped me to develop my creative skills. On the whole I have learnt how to communicate at a global level using forms of media and now at the end of my studies I feel I have produced work that will get me noticed.

My degree will definitely open up doors for myself. I have already gained useful contacts through my work-experience at both BBC Coventry and Warwickshire and Mercia. It has also provided me with the knowledge and familiarity of different media equipment and software from creating new projects alone and as part of a group. I am a confident user of the Nikon cameras and setting up of photography lighting i.e. a bowens kit, I have gained great experience from our recent photography shoots on our final project. Working as a ‘Floor manager’ in the first year has allowed me to work well as a team and take and give instructions under pressure efficiently and correctly. I throughly enjoyed this role and is something I am keeping my eyes open for whilst looking for a job on the internet.

Looking for jobs!

27 May

Now that my graduation is fast approaching I am looking further in to acheiving a full time job in the media industry. I have been receiving emails from the career advisors at the university on a regular basis. Some of them have been of interest to me and then some others I feel that I just don’t have enough experience for- this is something I feel I need to concentrate on.

Looking over my degree & future career aspects

27 May

I have been searching regularly on the internet for a full-time job after my course is finished. I have decided to look over my C.V and also skills in which I have gained whilst at University and how I feel my course & degree will benefit me in the near future. At this moment in time I still feel I am looking to work in the television or radio industry after University and I know that the area of work I have studied for the past 3years is such a difficult and competitive one at this moment in time that it will be quite a struggle to get somewhere in it. The various websites I have been looking on are; http://www.mediauk.com/, http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/, http://www.mandy.com, https://jobs.bbc.co.uk/fe/tpl_bbc01.asp and http://www.mediaweekjobs.co.uk/?CMP=KNC-GOOGLE. These have given me the inspiration to review what skills I have already and what are needed for this type of work.

Skills

  • Hardworking
  • Reliable
  • Trustworthy
  • Motivated
  • Excellent time keeping skills
  • Able to work alone or as part of a team
  • Confident, able to talk to large groups of people
  • Well organised
  • Very good at problem solving
  • Excellent telephone manners
  • Computer literate
  • Adaptable to change
  • Very approachable/Caring and considerate

Bringing it all together

27 May

So the degree show is only round the corner. Times are stressful!! but it wouldn’t be the same if they weren’t. As I am in the Events management group we have a lot of work handed on to us and hardly any people. In the meeting last Friday 5people turned up from the group to organise a whole degree show!!! We hadn’t even come up with a theme so I felt we were way behind. We did begin planning a ‘Hollywood’ theme however, people weren’t too keen on this idea… they EVENTUALLY decided so it was starting over again. And then a suggestion was made – ‘How about balloons & colours?’ Simple, easy and effective!! :) I started to plan what we would need and began looking for inspiration on the internet. The main reception needed to grab peoples attention straight away so this is where most of the attention needs to be made. On the internet I found a website called ‘Click4warehouse’ this company can provide us with 5.5ft balloons, I thought this would be great to have as a welcoming point, if we had 4 large balloons, different colours representing the different areas of the media we are covering throughout our degree show – Photography, Radio, Installation and Film. However, its proving much more difficult planning as the company did not get back to me straight away and I do not have any idea who is in charge of the budget. It’s going to cost around £220.00 and I don’t have that money to just pay it! Other things that we need will be 4 large posters in the reception this will have a black symbol in the middle of each that represents the area of media, i.e. a camera for photography with their colour around it. The balloons are going to be carried through the building and left outside the appropriate room so people know where to go to view film, installation etc. Then we have planned to have streamers and decorations around the reception and also to have a ‘tuck shop’ which will include lot’s of colourful sweets. It is proving a challenge because I feel the whole group are not putting enough effort in to the planning of it and only a few individuals are helping.
